HIM OR HER?

In some religions, a man is allowed to have four wives! Is there a shortage of men or are there too many women? It it about physical pleasure , or having many children (especially sons) as quickly as possible, or to build the army of the country? In other countries, women and men have multiple partners, and several children before actual marriage! Is one better than the other? Are these people trying to experiment, or create examples for others to emulate?
